The Brewster Building in Downtown Galt

The historic adaptive reuse design by Applied Architecture’s Mike Malinowski AIA for Galt’s historic Brewster Building (the original Odd Fellows Hall) I nearing completion.  We added a steel and glass elevator shaft adjacent to the historic façade to solve both the vertical circulation need, as well as the earthquake dilemma posed by the original glass and wood façade.  The contrast makes it clear where the new and old meet, while the proportions and details of the steel work have a historic feel to them akin to the steel work from railroad structures.  The building faces the main rail tracks that cut through Galt, completing the visual linkage between past and present.
